Fall – Now is the Time for Lawn Maintenance

As we quickly approach the fall season and the days become shorter and temperatures are cooling now is the best time of the year for your turf.  TLC during the fall prepares your grass to get ready for the dormant winter season in Maryland. Proper care and maintenance at this time of the year will allow your turf to thrive in the spring.

Each turf landscape area is affected by environmental changes and is different. The first step is to perform a soil test to check the pH level of the soil and its nutrients. A soil test is the best way to determine exactly what is needed and allow you or your landscape expert to provide the right solution.

Fall is also the time of year to core aerate.  Core aerators remove plugs of soil from the turf allowing oxygen, water, and nutrients to get into the ground and help loosen compacted soil for better root health.  New root growth will occur which in turn results in a stronger healthier lawn.

The fall season is also the time to sow new grass seeds but don’t wait much longer.  Seeding should be done by October 15th for best results.  Following a good aeration treatment spreading seed will help thicken lawns and build a solid base for a great turf area in the spring. If you have troubled grass areas that just haven’t done well during the summer months now is the time to plant new seed to address and fix these less than desirable areas.

These procedures are key to maintaining a beautiful turf landscape or to build a new one. Getting the job done now is vital to take advantage of the cool, wet weather which gives the newly sowed seeds the best chance to germinate and grow a strong root system.

At American Landscaping Inc, we are landscape experts in dealing with turf issues as well as any landscape concern you may have. We can assist you with your lawn renovation project and ensure the turf fall maintenance steps are performed properly resulting in the best possible outcome. We service residential as well as commercial properties.

Done right in the fall you will reap the benefits in the spring.  Remember to raise your mower blades to 3 ½”-4” during the growing season because cutting your lawn shorter will undo all your efforts to achieving a lush lawn.
